T.D. Jakes Foundation in Action

The T.D. Jakes Foundation was founded to expose underrepresented communities to science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) because “you can’t be what you don’t see.” In honor of women’s history month, TDJF president and CEO Hattie Hill gave girls and women of all ages an opportunity to see and hear from strong female role models in arts and technology, convening a thought-provoking Zoom roundtable dubbed: “Women in STEAM: A Conversation at the Intersection of Art & Science, Onscreen and Off.”

The hour-long discussion featured three highly accomplished women:

  • Lisa Edelstein, actress, director, writer and producer best known for her role as Dr. Lisa Cuddy on the hit series “House.”
  • Marisa Polvino, co-founder of Straight Up Impact, a woman-owned, fully integrated media company that finances, develops and produces thought-provoking stories that inspire audiences to enact positive change.
  • Lisa Gelobter, co-founder and CEO of tEQuitable, which uses technology to create more equitable workplaces. Previously, she was Chief Digital Officer at BET Networks and Chief Digital Service Officer for the Department of Education in the Obama administration.

Chairman T.D. Jakes shares the inspiration behind his new book, “Don’t Drop the Mic!” in which he shows readers how successful communication is key for building community, commanding power, and so much more. Watch here.

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

The NCAA has hired a civil rights law firm to conduct a gender-equity review for its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments less than a week after the organization was widely criticized for disparities between the two tournaments. Ali Kershner, the sports performance coach for Stanford’s women’s basketball team, posted photos of the women’s training facilities, writing “In a year defined by a fight for equality, this is a chance to have a conversation and get better.” Read more via CBS News.

As we continue to see a surge in violence and discrimination targeting Asian Americans over the past year amid the coronavirus pandemic, the White House is working to appoint a “senior level” Asian American Pacific Islander liaison to increase AAPI representation in the Biden administration. “The White House will add a senior level Asian American Pacific Islander liaison, who will ensure the community’s voice is further represented and heard,” said White House press secretary Jen Psaki. President Joe Biden called a sweeping elections law signed by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp this week an “atrocity,” and said the Justice Department is “taking a look” at the measure. The new law includes provisions to require voter identification for absentee ballots, limit the use of ballot drop boxes, give state officials more power over elections and make it a crime to offer voters food and water as they wait in line. Some critics argue that the law disproportionately affects Black voters. Together, we can and will get through this.
